Title: Freezemate Chess
Post by: ubersketch on April 29, 2018, 07:50:01 pm
Rules and pieces are the same as FIDE Chess except when pieces are mated, all pieces forcing it into mate are frozen forever.
Very simple variant but very interesting concept.

Do you mean when I piece is "attackable" it is frozen?

No, I mean that if any piece putting another piece into checkmate are frozen.

I don't understand because I think we are using the word Checkmate differently. When I say Checkmate, it's the end of the game because one King can make no legal move and is also being attacked. This is the win condition so it ends the game.

Other pieces can't be Checkmated or even put into Check... as only the King (or another Royal piece in some variants) can be put into Check.

I also don't understand the proposal either.  Does attacking a pinned piece count as checkmating it?  If many pieces checkmate another, but some proper subset achieves the checkmate, do you get to choose which ones freeze, or do all of the pieces that attack any of the defender's movement possibilities freeze?

If I attack a blocked pawn with anything, I lose that piece, right?  This seems like it would lead to a very sluggish game...

Do you win upon checkmating the enemy king, even though afterwards your checking piece is frozen and no longer giving check?

Every piece is frozen.
You win upon checkmating the enemy king, meaning it doesn't have anywhere to go without getting captured.

To understand this, I think you'll need to give an example game.
